Ex-fpo chief heinz-christian strache, who fell over ibiza video, has announced his return to the political scene.
He wants to challenge the current mayor of vienna, michael ludwig (spo), in the state elections in the austrian capital with a new burger movement, strache declared in vienna on wednesday.
The 50-year-old had appeared at the political ash wednesday of the allianz fur osterreich (dao), a party recently founded by fpo defectors. He described the dao as the first nucleus for the new citizens’ movement, which he will present in detail in a few weeks’ time.
Vienna state elections expected to take place in autumn. According to experts, strache’s entry into the state parliament is quite possible. It is unlikely that the 50-year-old will actually become mayor.
Strache had resigned as fpo chief and vice chancellor in may 2019 after the release of the ibiza video showing him appearing to be corrupt while talking to an alleged russian oligarch niece. The video also caused new elections in austria. During the election campaign, accusations were made that strache had put fpo party funds in his own pocket, and the public prosecutor’s office is investigating the matter. Strache has since vehemently denied the accusations.
The fpo crashed new elections in september 2019, blaming strache for a grossly poor election result. A few days after the election, the 50-year-old announced his departure from the political stage; he was ultimately expelled from the fpo.
